We Survived The Storm

Severe storms were predicted for the Elkhart area Tuesday night, with winds up to 60 MPH, lightning, rain and hail. We got the rain, lots of thunder and lighting, and some hail, but fortunately it wasn’t nearly as bad as predicted. But it sure was a noisy night that made sleeping difficult for a lot of people. And today the temperatures are dropping back down into the middle 60s.

We’ve been through a lot of bad weather in our fifteen years of fulltiming, and while we don’t freak out every time a storm is in the area, we do keep an eye on the news and have weather alerts coming to us when things are looking threatening. I’m a big fan of the Ambient Weather emergency solar hand crank AM/FM/NOAA digital radio as an early warning system.

Yesterday was a beautiful day in the low 80s and lots of folks were out walking around the campground, sitting in their lawn chairs enjoying the sunshine, and visiting with friends and neighbors. As I’ve said many time before, RVers are like a huge extended family and once you’ve been out here a while you’ll find yourself running into friends everywhere you go. One of the newest and best resources for connecting with other RVers is RVillage, a social networking website that is growing at an amazing rate. Curtis Coleman, who founded RVillage, is here at Elkhart Campground and I chatted with him briefly yesterday. I hope to be able to get together with him for a visit before he hits the road.

I also got to spend a few minutes chatting with Gypsy Journal subscribers W.C. and Leslie Earnst under their RV awning yesterday. They were at Escapade, and then here at Elkhart Campground, where Leslie taught 20 hours of Red Cross classes. It was nice to get to know them a bit and we look forward to crossing their path again somewhere in our travels.

Yesterday afternoon we had dinner at King Wha with Jim and Chris Guld from Geeks on Tour. Then later in the evening they came over to our motorhome for a visit. They were trying to help me come up with a way to make Dragon Dictate work better, but no matter what we tried, it still had so many errors that it is still quicker to type (even two fingered like I do) and go back and make corrections than it is to use Dragon and then try to figure out what the heck it comes up with. I figure that if Greg White and Chris and Jim can’t make it work, it’s time to give up, because if those three can’t fix it, nobody can!

And finally, who says RV shopping is always a hassle? Check out this video of a woman who stepped inside a motorhome and found a big surprise waiting for her. It will start your day on a happy note.
